Governance

Procurement needs good governance. In the early 2000s a number of scandals hit the headlines, the culmination of which led to increased shareholder and governmental interest in corporate governance and the passing of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) in 2002.

SOX affects US public companies and non-US companies with a US presence. It has a direct effect on procurement departments as it mandates that organisations comply with a wide range of financial management and reporting requirements. Companies need visibility into their spend management processes, an ability to track performance, as well as full oversight of financial records.

Good governance across procurement can be costly in terms of resources, but procurement leaders will view it as an important basis to increase business performance, reduce risk and make headway in combating the perennial problem of dissident spending..
