Leadership
The importance of procurement is increasing. Over the last few years organisations have seen the rise of the chief procurement officer (CPO) spearheading campaigns to reduce costs, leverage cash cycles and improve governance. With the ever increasing impact of purchasing on a company's bottom line, the need for clear and strong procurement leadership has never been so important.
However, it can be argued that for procurement to truly hold this position it needs an equal footing with stakeholders in boardroom discussions, and until that time arises it will never be held in the same regard as either finance, sales or marketing.
Strong procurement leadership requires high levels of communication and an understanding of supply and demand management within and across the company.
It also requires good judgment, despite the old adage ringing true that good judgment only comes from experience and experience comes from bad judgment.
To develop leaders, companies and individuals need a comprehensive strategy. They have to be able to present an integrated and holistic development package that meets the aspirations of the person involved. People must want to join the winning team and feel confident it has direction into the future.
